Harmony for Kidneys: A Night of Trivia, Karaoke, and Generosity

My journey embodies life’s unpredictability, resilience, and the slow progress measured one day at a time.

In late summer to early fall of 2018, I decided to prioritize my family’s future. Unexpectedly, lab results revealed protein in my urine, prompting further investigation. After multiple tests, I was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in October 2018, leaving me shocked and uncertain about the future. 

By June 2020, my CKD had progressed to Stage 3a, leading to tests and a renal biopsy revealed a grim reality: I had IgA Nephropathy, an rare autoimmune disease with no cure. The news was devastating, and the treatment journey ahead seemed daunting. Starting aggressive treatment in September 2020 brought its own challenges, with debilitating side effects and a significant decline in my physical health.

Despite the hardships, the shortened treatment course miraculously halted the rapid progression of my IgAN. Almost four years later, and the road to recovery remains long and arduous. Mental health struggles accompany the physical battles, but with the unwavering support of my family and friends, especially my husband, I continue to persevere.

Today, I am grateful for each day and the progress I’ve made, however small they are still milestones in my journey towards recovery. This journey has reminded me of the fragility of life but also offered hope for the future. Through it all, I remain thankful for the love and support that sustains me on this challenging path. My involvement with the IgAN Foundation has been a beacon of light, introducing me to a new family and circle of friends. As an IgAN ambassador, connecting with individuals on similar journeys has reinforced the comforting truth that I am not alone. Together, we navigate this path with strength and solidarity.
