In 2015, I was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease called IgA Nephropathy.  I went in for a DOT physical and a new nurse performed a dipstick test on my urine.  This is not normal protocol for these federally mandated physicals.  If this nurse had not made this mistake, I would probably still not know that I had kidney disease.  7 out of 10 people in this world who have kidney disease?  The symptoms that I experience tend to be written off as...you are just getting older. Generally, patients who find out they are ill crash into dialysis because their kidney function is so low . Please make sure you're doing a comprehensive metabolic panel and urinalysis every single time you do your annual physical.  

Because of this knowledge, I spend a lot of time advocating for proper testing for all people.
